Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical weight-loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original size, by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach along the greater curvature. The result is a sleeve or tube like structure. Most gastric bypass surgery is laparoscopic, which means the surgeon makes small cuts. That makes for shorter recovery time. Most people stay in the hospital 2 to 3 days, and get back to normal activities in 3 to 5 weeks. If the surgery must be "open," meaning the surgeon has to make a larger cut, healing takes longer. In gastric sleeve surgery your surgeon creates a small stomach "sleeve” using a stapling device and the rest of your stomach is permanently removed. Your stomach’s size will be reduced by approx 75%.
