An umbilical hernia is an area of weakness in your umbilicus (naval) that often develops in children. A paraumbilical or umbilical hernia is a common type of abdominal hernia. Paraumbilical hernias usually develop later in life and are often caused by acquired abdomen openings linked to intra-abdominal pressure from carrying excess body weight, ascites, cancer or other intra-abdominal malignancy, or multiple pregnancies.
