Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy has now almost replaced the Open Cholecystectomy
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy is Gold standerd for gallstone disease and for a decade it started slowly replacing the open cholecystectomy. 97 percent of the cholecystectomy now in Europe and America is being performed by Laparoscopy. This surgery is the first surgery a gyneral surgeon learn and it is considere as a essential surgical skill and parameter for Endoscopic Surgical Skill Qualification System requirements and certification by World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons. Endoscopic Surgical Skill Qualification System requirements test the ability to complete laparoscopic cholecystectomy like, simple and common laparoscopic surgeries in each field. In general surgery applicants are required to complete atleast laparoscopic cholecystectomy or appendicectomy appropriately and safely. Applicants who want to learn laparoscopy should have 2 years of experience with open surgery practice, in addition to having completed a formal postgraduate training program in General Surgery. Also, each surgeon must have performed more than 20 open cholecystectomy surgeries. According to assessment guidelines of World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons.
After learning basic laparoscopic surgeries like laparoscopic cholecystectomy and appendicectomy if the surgeon wants to start the advanced laparoscopic procedures like fundoplication, Colorectal procedures or bariatric minimal access surgery, the applicant skills are assessed by 2 referees who are renowned laparoscopic surgeon of the country and who view unedited videotapes showing the entire laparoscopic simple procedure like cholecystectomy or appendicectomy.
So laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become a benchmark procedure for a general surgeons and this is a necessity. To establish these referees 6 expert referees were first selected and were then chosen from World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons referee applicants. Each referee had completed more than 100 laparoscopic surgeries and was chosen after video assessments by the initial expert referees.
The Endoscopic Surgical Skill Qualification System of World Association of laparoscopic surgeons has just started at World Laparoscopy hospital and it has drawn a lot of attention from the public. We hope that this qualification system of WALS will help prevent complications of laparoscopic surgeries and promote safer surgical procedures for the community.
