This video Dr R K Mishra delivering lecture on Gastric Banding at World Laparoscopy Hospital. Laparoscopic gastric banding is surgery to help with weight loss. The surgeon places a band around the upper part of your stomach to create a small pouch to hold food.

Gastric banding is a type of bariatric surgery that involves placing a silicone band around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch that limits the amount of food the patient can eat. The band is adjustable and can be tightened or loosened as needed to control hunger and weight loss. Here are some key points about gastric banding:

  1. Indications: Gastric banding may be recommended for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 30 or higher with obesity-related health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea.

  2. Preparation: Prior to the procedure, the patient may need to follow a special diet and exercise program to lose weight and prepare the body for surgery. The patient will also need to undergo medical and psychological evaluations to ensure they are suitable candidates for surgery.

  3. Procedure: Gastric banding is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about an hour. The surgeon places the silicone band around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small pouch that limits the amount of food the patient can eat.

  4. Recovery: After the procedure, the patient may need to stay in the hospital for a day or two. The patient will need to follow a liquid diet for a few weeks and gradually transition to solid foods over the next few months. The patient will also need to attend follow-up appointments to adjust the band as needed and monitor weight loss progress.

  5. Benefits: Gastric banding can help patients achieve significant weight loss and improve obesity-related health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea.

  6. Risks: Gastric banding is a major surgery and carries risks such as bleeding, infection, and complications related to the anesthesia. The band may also slip, erode, or leak, requiring additional surgery. Patients may also experience nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea after the procedure.

  7. Lifestyle changes: Gastric banding is not a quick fix for weight loss and requires ongoing lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet and regular exercise to achieve and maintain weight loss.

It is important for patients to discuss the risks and benefits of gastric banding with their healthcare provider and to carefully consider whether this procedure is the best option for their individual needs and circumstances.

There are several medical conditions and factors that may make gastric banding unsuitable or more risky. Contraindications for gastric banding include:

  1. Pregnancy: Gastric banding is generally avoided during pregnancy due to the potential risk to the developing fetus.

  2. Severe heart or lung disease: Gastric banding may not be suitable for patients with severe heart or lung disease due to the increased risk of complications related to anesthesia and surgery.

  3. Gastrointestinal disorders: Gastric banding may not be suitable for patients with certain gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease or chronic pancreatitis.

  4. Previous stomach surgery: Patients who have had previous stomach surgery may not be suitable candidates for gastric banding.

  5. Bleeding disorders: Gastric banding may increase the risk of bleeding in patients with bleeding disorders such as hemophilia.

  6. Allergies to materials used in the band: Patients with known allergies to the materials used in the gastric band may not be suitable candidates for the procedure.

  7. Mental health conditions: Patients with certain mental health conditions such as severe depression or anxiety may not be suitable candidates for gastric banding.

It is important for patients to discuss their medical history and any potential contraindications with their healthcare provider before undergoing gastric banding. In some cases, gastric banding may still be appropriate with special considerations or modifications.
