Appendectomy Lecture by Dr. R K Mishra at University of South Florida
Dr. Mishra delivered a lecture on laparoscopic appendectomy at CAMLS, the University of South Florida during laparoscopic training course conducted by the World Laparoscopy Training Institute, Florida, USA.. An appendectomy is a fairly simple and common procedure. However, there are some risks associated with the surgery, including:
bleeding
infection
injury to nearby organs
blocked bowels
It’s important to note that the risks of an appendectomy are much less severe than the risks associated with untreated appendicitis. An appendectomy needs to be done immediately to prevent abscesses and peritonitis from developing.

Laparoscopic appendectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove the appendix. Here are the general steps involved in performing a laparoscopic appendectomy:
Anesthesia: The patient will be placed under general anesthesia.
Port placement: Several small incisions will be made in the abdomen to allow access for the laparoscope and other instruments. Typically, three to four ports will be placed.
Inspection of the abdomen: The laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera on the end, will be inserted through one of the incisions to allow the surgeon to view the inside of the abdomen and locate the appendix.
Mobilization of the appendix: The appendix will be carefully dissected and mobilized by dividing the tissues around it using specialized instruments.
Removal of the appendix: Once the appendix has been fully mobilized, it will be carefully removed through one of the small incisions.
Closure of incisions: The incisions will be closed with sutures or surgical glue.
Recovery: The patient will be monitored in the recovery room until they wake up from anesthesia, and then will be transferred to a regular hospital room. They may experience mild pain or discomfort, which can be managed with medication.
Laparoscopic appendectomy is generally associated with less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times compared to open appendectomy. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, such as bleeding, infection, and injury to surrounding organs. It is important to discuss the risks and benefits of laparoscopic appendectomy with your surgeon to determine if it is the best option for you.
