During fundoplication surgery, the upper curve of the stomach (the fundus) is wrapped around the esophagus and sewn into place so that the lower portion of the esophagus passes through a small tunnel of stomach muscle. This surgery strengthens the valve between the esophagus and stomach (lower esophageal sphincter), which stops acid from backing up into the esophagus as easily. This allows the esophagus to heal.

This procedure can be done through the abdomen or the chest. The chest approach is often used if a person is overweight or has a short esophagus.

This procedure is often done using a laparoscopic surgical technique. Outcomes of the laparoscopic technique are best when the surgery is done by a surgeon with experience using this procedure.

If a person has a hiatal hernia, which can cause gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms, it will also be repaired during this surgery.

Laparoscopic fundoplication is a surgical procedure used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The procedure involves wrapping the upper part of the stomach (fundus) around the lower part of the esophagus to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter, which is the muscle that prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus. Anesthesia: The patient will be placed under general anesthesia.

Port placement: Several small incisions will be made in the abdomen to allow access for the laparoscope and other instruments. Typically, four to five ports will be placed.

Fixation of the wrap: The wrap will be fixed in place using specialized instruments and sutures.

Closure of incisions: The incisions will be closed with sutures or surgical glue.

Recovery: The patient will be monitored in the recovery room until they wake up from anesthesia, and then will be transferred to a regular hospital room. They may experience mild pain or discomfort, which can be managed with medication.

Laparoscopic fundoplication is generally associated with less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times compared to traditional open surgery. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, such as bleeding, infection, and injury to surrounding organs.
