Long-term Outcomes of Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding
Himpens et al present a number of 151 patients who underwent laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB). Of those 151 patients, 82 (54.3%) were followed up for 12 years or longer. Of those 82 patients, 23 (28.0%) experienced band erosion, which was diagnosed in a mean duration of 4 years, and 41 (50.0%) had their band removed. People who still had this guitar rock band in position lost 48% of their excess fat, whereas people who had their band removed (simply because they did not lose weight) lost only 22% of the excess weight.
The number and type of comorbidities (eg, diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea) within this number of patients increased over time. I can't observe how by passing the duodenum and part of jejunum could be good for digestion. A minimum of inside the estimated 4 year lifetime of the LAP Band diet and exercise habits might be modified leading to a far more normal life. Isn't quality of life post operative more important compared to longevity of a device? Modern disease/health care only deals with numbers which typically come back to bite them. I always find it interesting that most studies recommended longer study periods; however they never come?
