Hi! During cutting and coagulation of tissue in Minimal Access Surgery in reality What is the difference between simple electrosurgical generator and Radiofrequency? what makes the radiofrequency generator better than simple electrosurgical cautery machine. Answer Please Karuna Chawla Guwahati |

Simple electrosurgical generator has frequency around 100 KHZ where as radiofrequency generator has very high frequency sometime around 1 MHZ. Higher the frequency will be then with less wattage of current better effect can be found. Radiofrequency electrosurgical effect in laparoscopic surgery begins with the passing of alternating electrical current (radiofrequency energy) through the tissue (lesion). Heat is generated at the site of the lesion by this alternating current due to turbulence of ion within the cell. This heat produces coagulation and cellular destruction results into cutting and hemostasis, resulting in ablation of the dissected tissue. With the newer RFA devices the thermal energy is evenly distributed to the plane of tissue in a consistent manner, causing consistent and complete plane of dissection with hemostasis using minimum collateral damage and less remote injury. You can easily understand it as sharper the sword less force is applied to cut. Exactly same way higher the frequency better electrosurgical dissection can be achieved with less wattage of current.
