An array of laser technology is available for use during laparoscopy for the incision, coagulation, or vaporization of tissue but I want to know is there any real advantage. Please can you explain to me the real advantage of laser in laparoscopic surgery?

The use of laser in laparoscopic intraabdominal–pelvic conditions such as endometriosis and adhesions was extremely popular in the 1970–2000s. But gradually is last decade laparoscopic surgery felt a gradual and continued decrease in laser use in minimal access surgery for these conditions as other less expensive and much more convenient alternatives have been utilized. Examples of these alternate methods include is plasma-kinetic or radiofrequency for endometrial ablations. Harmonic scalpel Monopolar spatula or small electrode catheter tips and loop electrodes are also used for lysis of adhesions, resection of endometriosis, and for cervical cone biopsies. The surgeon should have a thorough understanding of the procedure to be performed as well as the laser device, its delivery systems, and safety considerations.

Laser is not useful for big surgery like hysterectomy or myomectomy. The disadvantages of the CO2 laser in laparoscopic surgery include focusing of the helium–neon beam is difficult as well as production of a lot of smoke referred to as “plume,” which needs frequent evacuation to allow adequate visualization of the target. The another disadvantages of the CO2 laser include the absence of a histologc sample for biopsy when vaporization is performed and the expense of the laser machine is quite high compare to the real advantage in laparoscopy..

For few surgeries it is useful like, endometriosis. The results of CO2 laser treatment of intraepithelial neoplasia is also worldwide very acceptable and comparable to loop excision.
