Dear Dr Muhammad In the literatures there are strong evidence that prophylactic tranexamic acid reduces bleeding and blood transfusion. It is used extensively in gynecologist surgery and has been available for many years. However, the real effect of tranexamic acid on thromboembolic events and mortality remains uncertain. Use of Tranexamic Acid does not guarantee that bleeding will be completely absent and real estimation of its effect can not be measured. It may theoretically increase the chances of thromboembolism if duration of surgery is prolonged. Surgical patients should be made aware of this evidence so that they can make an informed consent. |
