Dear Sir,

I want to know Which anti-incontinence surgery option is better for stress urinary incontinence in a young sexually active patient undergoing total laparoscopic hysterectomy? Burch colposuspension or transobturator tape procedure.

Dear Dr. Verma

Recent study outcomes revealed similar success rates of Burch colposuspension and transobturator procedures, hence, either of these two procedures can be selected according to patient characteristics and surgeon experience. However, better outcomes appeared in terms of blood loss and operation time in correlation with Burch colposuspension vs TOT, indicating Burch colposuspension to be the preferred one.

On April 16, 2019, the FDA ordered all manufacturers of surgical mesh intended for transvaginal application to stop selling and distributing their products immediately.

Since the FDA has not received sufficient evidence to assure that the probable benefits of these devices outweigh their probable risks, the agency has concluded that these products do not have reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness.

Women who have received transvaginal mesh for the surgical repair of pelvic organ prolapse should continue with their annual and other routine check-ups and follow-up care. There is no need to take additional action if you are satisfied with your surgery and are not having any complications or symptoms.
