The pencil we are using in open surgery is considered as electro cautery or electrosurgery? |

Electrocautery is only used in old devices. All the new surgical instruments of open surgery, as well as laparoscopy, are using high-frequency electrosurgery. Electrocautery has a platinum loop at the end of the instrument which uses direct current and becomes red hot. Electrocautery is essentially an application of heat. However, in electrosurgery 500 Kilohertz to 3.5 megahertz frequency alternating current is used. This high frequency creates turbulence of ions inside the cell and heat is produced within the cell. So surgical pencil is using high-frequency electrosurgery just like how we use hook in laparoscopy. The machine is also delivering high-frequency alternating current to surgical pencil. |
