Study was performed at World Laparoscopy Hospital by analyzing the video ratings data of minimal access surgeon’s operating skills has successfully predicted whether patients would suffer complications after leaving the operating room. The research assessed the connection between the technical skill of 100 laparoscopic surgeons and post-surgery complications in 4000 patients undergoing commonly performed laparoscopic general and gynecological surgery. High skill and well trained laparoscopic surgeons who has taken training in a good training institute, as rated by their peers who has started training just by seeing other how they do, had significantly fewer post-surgery complications for example bleeding, electrosurgical injury or infections, based on the study published in World Journal of Laparoscopic Surgery. 

 

Patients of a well-trained laparoscopic surgeons were also less inclined to create a return visit to the hospital or emergency department. Good training and assessment in a reputed institute of a surgeon operative skill may be a more practical, more direct, and ultimately more informative test for assessing the laparoscopic surgical proficiency than other measures,” says Dr. R.K. Mishra, professor of minimal access surgery and director of World Laparoscopy Hospital. 
 

Based on the research performed at World Laparoscopy Hospital viewing just surgical video that surgeons submitted themselves, surgeons were rated on a scale of just one to five, with 1 indicating the skill expected of the minimal access surgery chief resident and 5 indicating the ability of a master surgeon. 
 

Summary ratings varied from 2 to 4.9 and greater skill was associated with fewer postoperative complications and shorter operations. Within the study, minimal access surgeons or gynecologists who received low skill scores had complication rates much high 15% compared to 3% among high skill well trained laparoscopic surgeons. A high level of skill can also be related to shorter operating time. Prolonged operating times to increased perils of certain types of complications for example infection, electrosurgical injury and venous thromboembolisms that can travel to the lungs.
