Laparoscopy permits diagnosis and treatment to be combined in the same procedure and ectopic pregnancies can be diagnosed and treated at an early stage. In fact, laparoscopy is not only suitable for early ectopic pregnancies but is also safe and feasible in instances where there are tubal rupture and hemoperitoneum, provided the patient is not severely compromised hemodynamically.

A chronic ectopic pregnancy is a form of tubal pregnancy in which there is gradual disintegration of the tubal wall with slow and/or repeated episodes of hemorrhaging leading to the formation of a pelvic mass. The mass may obliterate uterine margins and be confused for pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, or uterine leiomyomas. With an increased awareness of this entity and its mildly symptomatic and protracted clinical course, a preoperative diagnosis should be possible.
