Inaugural Ceremony of WALS 2025: A Historic Gathering of Surgical Excellence on 8th of February 2025
The 8th World Congress of Laparoscopic Surgeons (WALS 2025) was inaugurated with grandeur and reverence on the 8th of February 2025 at The Leela Ambience Gurugram, marking yet another milestone in the advancement of minimal access surgery. This prestigious gathering of eminent surgeons and gynecologists from around the world highlighted the ever-evolving landscape of surgical innovations and techniques.
The ceremony commenced with a warm welcome to the esteemed dignitaries gracing the dais, including Shri Rajnath Singh, Honorable Minister and Chief Guest of the event. His presence underscored the significance of the advancements in minimal access surgery and the Indian government’s commitment to fostering medical excellence.
Dr. R.K. Mishra, the Organizing Chairman of WALS 2025 and a pioneer in laparoscopic and robotic surgery, delivered the opening address, setting the tone for an intellectually enriching congress. He emphasized the role of minimal access surgery in transforming patient outcomes, reducing morbidity, and enhancing recovery rates.
Dr. Prof. Rajesh Shah, President of WALS, followed with an insightful speech on the society’s global impact, outlining its commitment to fostering research, education, and collaboration among surgeons worldwide. Dr. Abhijat Sheth, President of the National Board of Examinations, addressed the audience, stressing the importance of standardized training and accreditation in laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
Dr. Arti Sarin, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), spoke about the integration of minimal access techniques in military medicine, while Dr. Mandeep Sachdeva, Registrar of the Haryana Medical Council, emphasized the regulatory aspects of surgical advancements. Dr. Bhavneet Bhalla, Co-Organizing Chairman, extended his gratitude to all delegates, speakers, and industry partners for their support in making WALS 2025 a resounding success.
The front-row dignitaries included some of the most distinguished names in surgery: Padma Shri awardee Dr. Pradeep Chowbey, a stalwart in laparoscopic surgery; Dr. Lalit Shah, President of the Urological Society of India (USI); Dr. K.N. Srivastava, President of the Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of India (SELSI); Dr. Satish Midha, President of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo Surgeons (IAGES); Dr. Ashok Puranik, Director of AIIMS Guwahati; and Dr. Arun Prasad, Director of Minimal Access Surgery at Apollo Group of Hospitals.
A ceremonial lamp-lighting marked the official inauguration, symbolizing knowledge, wisdom, and the commitment to surgical excellence. This was followed by a keynote address by Shri Rajnath Singh, who lauded the efforts of WALS in bridging the gap between technology and surgical practice.
