When food is ingested, it goes from the pouch to the section of the small intestine for ‘processing’ without traveling through the entire intestine.

During a sleeve gastrectomy, the laparoscopic  surgeon decreases the size of the stomach and surgical staples divide it vertically. The new stomach is the shape of a slim banana, while the rest is removed. It will now hold 10 percent of what a normal stomach can.
