Recurrent incisional hernias can occur for various reasons, including: Inadequate Healing: Poor wound healing due to factors such as infection, inadequate blood supply, or poor surgical technique can lead to recurrence. Increased Intra-abdominal Pressure: Activities or conditions that increase pressure within the abdomen, such as heavy lifting, chronic coughing, constipation, obesity, or pregnancy, can contribute to hernia recurrence. Weakness of Abdominal Wall: The inherent weakness of the abdominal muscles and fascia can predispose to hernia recurrence, especially if the original repair did not adequately reinforce the weakened area. Tension on Repair Site: If the original hernia repair was performed under tension, it is more likely to fail. Tension-free techniques, such as using mesh, are preferred to reduce recurrence rates. Mesh Issues: If mesh was used in the initial repair, issues such as mesh migration, shrinkage, or infection can lead to recurrence. Patient-Related Factors: Conditions like diabetes, smoking, malnutrition, and immunosuppression can impair healing and increase the risk of recurrence. |
