Dear Mike
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is easily the most commonly used process of the treatment of kidney stones. In ESWL, shock waves that are created away from body travel through the skin and the body tissues until they hit the denser stones. The stones break up into small particles and are easily passed through the urinary tract in the urine. Various kinds ESWL devices exist. Most devices use either x rays or ultrasound to assist the surgeon target the stone during treatment. For most kinds of ESWL procedures, anesthesia is required. In many cases, ESWL may be done on an outpatient basis. Time to recover is relatively short, and many people can resume normal activities a few weeks. Complications may occur with ESWL. Some patients have blood in their urine during their visit after treatment. Bruising and minor discomfort in the back or abdomen in the shock waves can happen. To reduce the chance of complications, doctors usually tell patients to prevent taking aspirin and other medicines that affect blood clotting for many weeks before treatment. Sometimes, the shattered stone particles cause minor blockage because they pass through the urinary tract and cause discomfort. In some cases, the doctor will insert a small tube known as a stent with the bladder into the ureter to help the fragments pass. Sometimes the stone is not completely shattered with one treatment, and extra treatments may be required. Just like any interventional, surgical procedure, potential risks and complications ought to be discussed with the doctor before making cure decision.

Other treatments are PCNL and Surgery (Open Surgery). If the stone in in ureter URS also can be performed.
