I am a research nurse and cannot find the answers to a couple questions I have. I hope you can help, or at least point me in the right direction...
1. Are thermal injuries visable to the sigmoid colon before closing and at what point do these burns become visable ie: what do these burns look like? at what thickness are these burns before they're visable?
Surgery was performed using ACE Harmonic scalpel.
2. If thermal injury is visualized, can this be reaired before closing?
I thank you for your help.

Dear Michele Flagg RN
Harmonic scalpel generally does not cause thermal injury unless vibrating jaws are directly touching the bowel but possibility can not be denied. Initially it looks white in color and in couple od days there may be perforation. If recognized intraoperatively surgeon should cut the burnt area and should be sutured. Although in case of extensive burn there may be necessity of colostomy.

With regards
Sadhana
