My daughter is 3.5 years old. She suffered from abdominal pain when I took her to doctor. Upon initial ultrasound, it was discovered that she had a gallstone about 9mm. Subsequent ultrasounds confirmed the same along with one additional information; the presence of sludge in CBD. I consulted a paeds surgeon and it was told that we need a surgery. I am worried about my daughter. She is just 3.5 years old. Kindly suggest a way forward. In a recent LFT, she had very high values of SGPT (ALT) and SGOT(AST); over 400. Her bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase, however, are within normal ranges. The surgeon suggested that we retake the test since the values are not correlated due to ALP being within normal range.

An important historical fact: On 25.07.11 her SGPT values were normal (within normal ranges) and within 15 days, the value has shoot up (over 400). On 25th, she was admitted for some vomiting/ lower food intake/ dehydration/ loose stools etc

Dear Fahd Bin Aftab

Pediatric Surgery is ideal management for gallstone disease of child. Even if your child is only 3.5 year old you should not worry. The advantages of pediatric laparoscopic cholecystectomy include a shorter hospitalization, decreased postoperative discomfort, and a much shorter interval between the surgical procedure and return to normal activities such as school and play. At this time, it is recommended for those children without complications from their cholelithiasis such as common duct obstruction and gallstone pancreatitis to go for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. If you will delay surgery this sludge can increase and other complication will increase so please get the surgery of your child done.

Sadhana
