Gallbladder stones

I had open cholecystectomy Jan. 2011. Until now, there is the same nagging pain in my right upper abdomen. MRI findings say CYSTIC DUCT STUMP GALLBLADDER STUMP, HEPATIC DUCT WITH RETAINED TINY LITHIASIS. A blind-ended saccular structure, exhibiting fluid signal, is detected in the region of the gallbladder fossa which is connected to the cystic duct. It measures approximately 1.7 x cm in axial diameters. Tiny low signals measuring 0.2 to 0.3 cm are seen within its lumen. A small 0.3 cm signal void is also identified within the proximal cystic duct. The common bile duct shows normal position, caliber and length with a homogeneous, fluid equivalent intraluminal signal. It measures 0.6 cm in maximum diameter and gradually tapers as it enters the ampulla. The imaged portions of the intrahepatic ducts appear normal. The pancreatic duct shows normal position, length, and caliber with homogeneous internal structure and smooth contours. Supplemental MR images of the upper abdomen show relatively increased signal intensity of the liver parenchyma compared to the spleen in the in-phase sequence with signal drop-off in the out-of-phase sequence. No focal lesions are identified in the liver. Impression: Cystic structure within the gallbladder fossa, as detailed above. This could be dilated gallbladder/cystic duct stump with possible retained tiny lithiases. |

I missed to ask a question. How can it happen that after open cholecystectomy, a remnant gallbladder is left behind. Could the surgeon simply missed to remove the entire gallbaldder? How can that happen? |
