Sir, I have undergone Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery for control of Morbid Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension and Coronary Artery Disease. Our department did not reimbursed the amount citing the reason that the surgery comes under Cosmetic Surgery. I have seen a posting in Expressindia dated Feb 23, 2009 at 1221 hrs IST in which it was stated that "It is not a cosmetic surgery. It reduces weight as much as 70-100 kg. It is a life-saving surgery like a heart or coronary-bypass," said Dr Pradeep Chowbey, secretary general of Asia Pacific Bariatric Surgery Society (APBSS) and president of Obesity Surgery Society of India (OSSI). " Kindly clarify whether the surgery comes under cosmetic or not and also provide necessary information. |

Dear Purna Chandra Sekhar Rao The surgical treatment of morbid obesity is a covered benefit under many insurance policies but you have to take prior authorization. Coverage depends on what type of policy you have and the terms within the policy. Each insurance policy can vary greatly, even when issued by the same company. Your employer dictates the coverage in your policy. At Bariatric Surgery Specialists, if you have the benefit and meet the requirements, we WILL get you approved from insurance company. If you have not taken the authorization from the company before you can not claim for it and it will be difficult to fight because obesity surgery is not an emergency surgery. With regards M.K.
