Dear Doctor, I am 29 year old woman. I have a firm globular, gradually increasing, warm tender swelling at the 3rd Costochondral Junction. I have shown it to doctors in Lucknow. The CT scan shows a moderate sized(4.5 by3.2 cm) well marginated oval shaped homogenous soft tissue density lesion is seen at the junction of the manubrium/body of the sternum slightly towrds left side of midline with slight focal indentation over the underlying left lung tissue. No necrosis/calcification/fat density is seen. No marginal spiculation is noted.Pectoralis muscle in the same region is splayed antero-laterally. No underlying bony erosive changes are seen.Also, calcified density is seen in right para tracheal location-likely healed calcified lymphnode. The scant yellow mucoid pus apirated for FNAC and stained by H&E and Pap method show fair number of single scattered atypical cells having round eccentric nuclei with smooth nuclear margin and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm dispersed in myxoid background. Small number of stromal cells and red blood cells are seen. The FNAC findings indicate a benign chondromyxoid lesion. Biopsy examination is strongly advised. I would like to find out what is the correct path ahead for me. Thank You. |

Dear Sudhi Choudhary In our opinion you should get biopsy done if FNAC has shown benign chondromyxoid lesion. Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare, benign tumor of the bone. As its name implies, this benign cartilaginous neoplasm consists of chondroid, myxoid, and fibrous tissue in variable amounts, and microscopic evaluation of a wide area of the tumor may be necessary to identify all of the tissue subtypes. Once you will let us know the report of biopsy we can advice you accordingly. With regards M.K. Gupta |
