hiatal hernia

Large sliding hiatal hernia with barrett's esophagus, metaplasia, low grade glandular dysplasia, but no malignancy. Do I need to get this repaired? Have some bleeding shortness of breath when bending and feel nauseous also can't do what I used to do. |

Dear Floyd North You should opt for surgical management for your hiatal hernia. Treatment of large para-esophageal hernias causing symptoms requires surgery and preferably laparoscopic surgery. During laparoscopic fundoplication surgery, the stomach is pulled down into the abdomen, the esophageal hiatus is made smaller, and the esophagus is attached firmly to the diaphragm. This procedure restores the normal anatomy. Since sliding hiatal hernias rarely cause problems themselves but rather contribute to acid reflux, the treatment for patients with hiatal hernias is usually the same as for the associated GERD. If the GERD is severe, complicated, or unresponsive to reasonable doses of medications, surgery often is performed. At the time of laparoscopic fundoplication surgery, the hiatal hernia is eliminated in a manner similar to the repair of para-esophageal hernias. However, in addition, part of the upper stomach is wrapped around the lower sphincter to augment the pressure at the sphincter and further prevent acid reflux. With regards M.K. Gupta |

I am a combat veteran. Here at the VA in El Paso they are refusing to repair the problem. I have tried everything. Do you know any place to get some help? |

add to March 14, replay they are just giving me acid reflux medicine which isn't right I have had this sence 1993 and I don't know how long before. Are they going to be held liable. I thought my fore fathers defeated hitler his goons and there war against humanity. |
