Dear Nikhil

Biliary sludge is a mixture of particulate solids that have precipitated from bile in the gallbladder. Such sediment in bile is consists of cholesterol crystals, calcium bilirubinate pigment, and other calcium salts. Sludge is usually detected on transabdominal ultrasonography.

While the presence of sludge in the gallbladder is a step in the process of forming gallstones, having sludge in the gallbladder does not necessarily mean gallstones are inevitable.

If sludge or gallstones in the gallbladder appears to be the cause of the pain, I probably will recommend laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the surgical removal of the gallbladder.
