Laparoscopic hernia repair is similar to other laparoscopic procedures. General anesthesia is given, along with a small cut (incision) is made in or simply below the navel. The abdomen is inflated with air so the surgeon can easily see the abdominal organs. A thin, lighted scope known as a laparoscope is inserted with the incision. The instruments to repair the hernia are inserted through other small incisions within the lower abdomen. Mesh is then placed within the defect to reinforce the abdominal wall. |
