My 85 year old father is due to have a colonoscopy due to un explained weight loss. He has had 3 heart attacks in the last 4 years and has had two stents implanted. The prep that has been prescribed is "Picoprep".
1. Is it safe for him to take this solution?
2. Should he not have a consult with the phycian who is performing the procedure prior to taking the prep?
3. Is it safe for him to consume the prep at home?

Dear Fig

There should nt be any difficulty taking this in your own home by your father.

Sodium picosulfate, also called sodium picosulphate is a safe medicine and act as a contact laxative used as a treatment for constipation in order to prepare the large bowel before colonoscopy or surgery.

Orally administered sodium picosulfate is generally used for thorough evacuation from the bowel, usually for patients who arere getting ready to undergo a colonoscopy. It works very quickly, so use of a toilet at all times is recommended. It starts off by making bowel motions looser and more frequent, but within an hour of taking it the patient should experience diarrhea.

Dear Dr Chauhan
According to research I have done it is not safe for cardical and kidney patients. My father had a major heart attack within 12 hours of taking Pico Prep.

Dear Lionel Fig

As you know any exertion or even diarrhea can precipitate heart attack to the patient who are on high risk. If your father has already the problem with the previous dose then we will recommend you that please any laxative or purgative you should avoid or should be taken after admitting in hospital.
