Dear Karthi

Any glandular swelling should not be taken lightly. Gland swelling commonly refers to enlargement of the lymph glands, also called lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small rounded or bean-shaped masses of lymphatic tissue surrounded by a capsule of connective tissue.

Lymph glands are located in lots of places within the lymphatic system through the body. Lymph nodes filter the lymphatic fluid and store special cells that may trap cancer cells or bacteria which are traveling with the body in the lymph fluid. The lymph nodes are crucial for the body's immune response and are principal sites where lots of immune reactions are initiated.

Groups of lymph nodes are found within the neck, round the collarbone, within the armpit like in your case, and in the groin.

During a physical examination your physician may go through, palpate these areas to consider swollen or enlarged lymph glands.

Swelling of the lymph glands is usually a result of local or widespread inflammation, but sometimes enlarged lymph nodes result from cancer. Swollen lymph glands are known as lymphadenopathy. Inflammation of the lymph node is referred to as lymphadenitis.

In your case first you should get advice of your family physician and if he says you can take advice of a surgeon. Few investigations like FNAC etc.. will be required before drawing attention.
