Dear Vishal Sharma

Increased ESR is found in hundreds of disease. The ESR is a simple non-specific screening test that indirectly measures the existence of inflammation in the body. It reflects the tendency of red blood cells to settle faster when confronted with some disease states, usually due to increases in plasma fibrinogen, immunoglobulins, along with other acute-phase reaction proteins. Changes in red cell shape or numbers could also modify the ESR.

It is a simple and inexpensive test that measures the distance that red blood cells have fallen after 1 hour in a vertical column of anti-coagulated blood under the influence of gravity. The amount of fibrinogen within the blood directly correlates using the ESR. Although a lot of research has been done, an increased ESR remains a nonspecific finding. Using the ESR as a screening test in asymptomatic persons is limited by its low sensitivity and specificity because it is impacted by many variables.

An elevated ESR even without the other findings should not prompt an extensive laboratory or radiographic evaluation but a gentle to moderately raised one without any obvious cause should be repeated after a couple of months rather than a costly look for occult disease.

Your mother need further investigation to find out cause of increased EST and swelling leg.
