Dear Tammy Hines

Your doctors are avoiding you means you may not be a fit candidate of laparoscopic surgery. We as a doctor would say that no decision should be taken by patient to proceed to surgery for hiatus hernia lightly. The operation of hiatus hernia is relatively complex and if possible, non-surgical remedies are preferable.

There are specific things one can do to live better with hiatus hernia. If a person can identify, for example, that certain foods aggravate the condition whilst others do not, then simple avoidance of these foods is a straightforward way of avoiding discomfort of regurgitation and bloating. Further, it is clear that to consume huge meal and promptly go and bend over digging abdomen is not sensible if it is recognized to create problems. Again, it is really an example where one can spare ones self the symptoms by simple adjustment towards the timing and choices of these activities. However, for many patients with hiatus hernia, even drinking a glass water before prone can cause hours of discomfort. The answer here may, again, be not to eat or drinking to have an appropriate amount of time before prone. There is also certain adjustments one can make to one is bed to be able to alter the angle. This can also assist in lowering the occurrences of reflux. The advantage of the changing lifestyle approach is, mainly, which you may avoid medical or surgical intervention altogether and then accept the problem without suffering the symptoms. The disadvantages are that it could not be possible to look for a lifestyle that deals with the symptoms and also the inconvenience caused may be intolerable.
