Hello! I have been diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease, adult type, at the age of 17. I got this disease from my mother who has the same, and at the age of 57 she is making hemodialysis for 2 and a half years. In 2012 the dimensions of the cysts are around 3-4 cm. I have done further investigation concerning this disease and doctors said that it is operable. I want to ask if there is any other treatment for this disease because the laparoscopic surgery in my country (Romania) is 5000 euro, money that I do not possess. Can you somehow help me in any way or with any advice?

Thank you!

With respect,
Cristina Ioana Smeu

Dear Cristina Ioana Smeu

Some one is misguiding you. There is no operative treatment of polycystic kidney disease.

Surgery is only indicated If infected renal or hepatic cysts do not respond to conventional antibiotic therapy, surgical drainage may be necessary. Autosomal dominant (ADPKD) is one of the most common life-threatening genetic diseases. It does not skip a generation. There is usually a family history of ADPKD. Parents with ADPKD have a 50 percent chance of passing the disease on to each of their children.

Pharmacologic therapy is necessary to accomplish the following:

Hello and thank you for your reply. I guess that the disease is ADPKD.
I was informed that through laparoscopic surgery they will drain the liquid from the cysts and by this method they will somehow try to maintain the life of the kidney longer.
So you are saying that this cysts can somehow be treated through antibiotics? I have heard of another patient that has performed this laparoscopic surgery 2 years ago and the cysts have no longer evolved on the kidney that they have operated her on.
Can you somehow give me further information about methods of treating this disease?

Thank you!
