In order to be deductible, the coismtec procedure and related expenses have to be "necessary to ameliorate a deformity arising from, or directly related to, a congenital abnormality, a personal injury resulting from trauma, or a disfiguring disease." If expenses are not deductible under such provision, then amounts paid for insurance coverage for such expenses and other related expenses (laboratory tests, recovery procedures) are not deductible, and an employer's reimbursement of such expenses under a health plan is not excludable from your income. In other words, if this surgery was necessary to correct the deformity directly related to congenital abnormality or physical injury, then all the expenses related to it are deductible. (For example, LASIK and radial keratomy are deductible).
