I have undergone fundoplication surgery. What activities should I avoid during my recovery? When can I resume normal physical activities, including exercise and lifting heavy objects? |

After undergoing fundoplication surgery, it is important to follow your doctor's instructions and take certain precautions to ensure a smooth recovery. Here are some general guidelines to help you during your recovery: Activities to Avoid: Heavy Lifting: Avoid lifting heavy objects (usually anything over 10-15 pounds) for at least 4-6 weeks post-surgery. This helps prevent strain on your surgical site. Strenuous Exercise: Avoid strenuous exercises, including high-intensity workouts, weightlifting, and activities that involve a lot of bending or twisting, for at least 4-6 weeks. Driving: Avoid driving for at least 1-2 weeks or until you are no longer taking narcotic pain medications and can move comfortably. Smoking and Alcohol: Avoid smoking and consuming alcohol as they can delay the healing process and irritate your stomach. Straining: Avoid straining during bowel movements. Use a stool softener if necessary to prevent constipation and straining. Gradual Resumption of Activities: Walking: You can start with light walking as soon as you feel able, usually within a few days after surgery. Walking helps improve circulation and speeds up recovery. Light Activities: Gradually resume light household activities as tolerated, avoiding any that cause discomfort or pain. Driving and Work: You may resume driving and return to work (if it is not physically demanding) within 1-2 weeks, depending on your comfort level and doctor's advice. Exercise: Gradually reintroduce light exercises, such as gentle stretching and low-impact activities, around 4-6 weeks post-surgery. Always start slowly and listen to your body. Heavy Lifting and Strenuous Activities: Typically, you can resume these activities around 6-8 weeks after surgery, but it is essential to get clearance from your doctor before doing so. Follow-Up Care: Regular Check-Ups: Attend all follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your progress and address any concerns. Dietary Modifications: Follow any dietary recommendations given by your doctor, which may include eating smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding foods that can irritate your stomach or esophagus. Listen to Your Body: Pain and Discomfort: If you experience pain, discomfort, or any unusual symptoms, stop the activity immediately and consult your doctor. Gradual Increase: Gradually increase the intensity and duration of your activities as you feel stronger and more comfortable. |
