Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, can be caused by viral, bacterial, or allergic reactions. The treatment and whether you need prescription medication depend on the cause of your conjunctivitis: Viral Conjunctivitis: Typically does not require prescription medication. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms, which can include using artificial tears, cold compresses, and over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines if itching is present. This type usually resolves on its own within 1-2 weeks. Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Often requires antibiotic eye drops or ointments prescribed by a doctor. Commonly prescribed antibiotics include erythromycin, polymyxin-trimethoprim, or ciprofloxacin. Side Effects: These medications can cause side effects such as eye irritation, stinging, burning, or allergic reactions. Allergic Conjunctivitis: Can often be managed with OTC antihistamine or anti-inflammatory eye drops. Prescription medications may be necessary if symptoms are severe. Side Effects: OTC antihistamine eye drops may cause burning, stinging, or dryness in the eyes. General Recommendations: Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, and do not share towels or bedding. Avoid allergens if you have allergic conjunctivitis. Consult a doctor: If you have severe symptoms, pain, vision changes, or if the condition does not improve with OTC treatments, it's important to see a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. |
