Laparoscopic Intervention in Treating Acute Appendicitis
It was our operation theatre exposure session and I was wondering how our professor would be performing the appendicitis surgery (appendicectomy) on a patient through laparoscopy. I was little more concerned as the patient was a young boy and I was not sure how this acute appendicitis surgery would be performed through laparoscopy. The procedure preceded with few mini 5mm incisions and was performed and completed within 30 minutes only. My classmates and I were all keenly watching the procedure as trainees at Laparoscopy Hospital. The procedure was not as complicated as I thought it to be. While performing the surgery, our professor started narrating every step of the surgery. We are all trained by expert surgeons while they performed the operation live on the patients. We had plenty of live demonstrations that helped us improve our skills. Once the demonstration is complete, the trainees would later be allowed to perform the surgery on highly advanced virtual reality simulator, synthetic materials and animal themselves with the guidance and the presence of laparoscopic expert surgeons.
The greatest advantage of laparoscopic surgeries over the traditional way of treating the patient is that the wounds get healed faster and the chances of infection are also much reduced. This is because there is no need to use various medicinal instruments (of course, sterilized) and also use your hands to handle the cut open sections of the abdominal wall. Few other points which he mentioned were about the pain the patient would have and the date of discharge after the surgery. The pain after this surgery is noticed to be less when compared to those who have had their appendicitis surgery in the traditional way. As the pain and the procedure involved are simple, the number of days one needed to stay in the hospital is also reduced markedly and hence patient can return to his work quickly.
One more interesting application of laparoscopic procedures is that it greatly helps in diagnosing the infertility problems of women than performing the operating procedure as such. As women are likely to have similar pain for both appendicitis and genital pathology, laparoscopy is found to be an efficient way to diagnose the patient’s condition before declaring the defect and finalizing the method to be used on them to rectify the defect. The procedure of laparoscopy is really wonderful as it creates very little pain and you can be back to normal within a short period of time.
At Laparoscopy Hospital, we (the trainee surgeons, gynecologists, pediatric surgeons and urologist) are given number of chances to perform the procedures in lab with the assistance of an expert laparoscopic surgeon. This is because expertise in this field is very essential to perform any surgery through laparoscopy. Proper hand eye coordination should develop before we could start surgery on our own patients. Only experienced surgeons are considered to be eligible for performing appendicectomy surgery for acute appendicitis through laparoscopy as it requires keen attention and inflammation or perforation in the organ might be risky. The condition of the patient is diagnosed appropriately before treating the patient with a perforation in the appendix. These are few reasons why surgeons are trained extensively for diagnosis and performing the actual procedure. Once the technique is mastered, this can be considered to be the easiest way in treating the patients without pain and difficulty.
